The Port has issued an update to the earlier message issued on VBS (see below).
“We have now installed cleaning solution and paper towels at all in-gates, we will put a notice out on VBS informing everyone.”
“Please note that the cleaning solution at the gates is for wiping down the hand scanners, the solution is not for rubbing on your hands as it contains a diluted form of bleach.
We are aware that concerns have been raised by some drivers about the use of hand scanners at our Terminal In-Gates. The scanners form an integral part of the port’s security regime and are necessary to comply with internationally agreed security regulations. We have raised the concerns of hauliers with the Department for Transport but the Government indicated there are no plans at this stage to relax those requirements in the interests of national security.
All companies have a duty of care to their employees, and to ensure that they are equipped to do their job safely. It is clear, however, that a number of drivers have not been provided by their own employers with hand sanitisers or anti-viral wipes. We have therefore installed a number dispensers at Terminal In Gates containing Sodium Hypochlorite Solution (0.5%) which drivers can use to wipe the screen and hand scanner prior to use (the solution is a disinfectant not a hand sanitiser and must only be applied to tissue, not hands). We have already increased the frequency of our cleaning regime for these hand scanners and will continue to do so.
There has also been a marked rise in recent days in drivers abusing our gate staff. It should be made clear that this is totally unnecessary and unacceptable. Any driver caught abusing any port employee or equipment, including scanners and disinfectant, will have their RHIDES card removed and be banned indefinitely from entering the port.
